Estar vs. Ser

Estar and Ser are both translated as the English verb 'to be'. In Spanish, these are two verbs with absolutely different meanings.

Estar: Physical welfare, condition or healthy state

¿Cómo estás?

¿Cómo está tu familia?

Estoy bien

Creo que mañana el clima va a estar mejor

How are you?

How is your family?

I am well

I believe the weather will be better tomorrow


Estar: Location or distance

¿Dónde estabas ayer, a las cinco en la tarde?

El gato está en la mesa

Acá estamos en el Parque Centenario

Mi madre está en Miami

Estar: Personal emotional conditions

Cecilia estaba feliz con sus regalos

Estar: Condition or state of food or things

La sopa está fría

Este café está muy rico

The soup is cold

The apples are rotten

Ser: To tell the time and date

¿Qué hora es?

Ya es mediodía

Son las siete y media

Hoy no es lunes, es martes

What time is it?

It's noon already

It's seven thirty (7:30)

Today isn't monday, it's tuesday


Ser: To indicate a profession or title

Sos* artista

Ella es enfermera

Juila es profesora de Indumentaria

Yo no soy timido, soy chamuyero*

You are an artist

She is a nurse

Julia is a teacher of Costume design

I'm not a shy person, I'm a smooth talker


Ser: To indicate nationality or origin

Ser: To indicate permanent personal characteristics

Ana es muy linda

Ser: To indicate possession

Ser: To indicate the materials things are made of
