Conocer vs. Saber

The verbs conocer and saber are equivalent to the English verb 'to know', but in Spanish, they have different meanings. Saber is used to express knowledge or ignorance of facts or information about something. Conocer is used to express one is or is not acquainted with a person, place or object.

Conocer: To be acquainted with a person, place, or thing

Yo no conozco a María

Fernanda y Alfredo conocen Paraguay

I don't know Maria

Fernando and Alfredo know (are acquainted with) Paraguay


Saber: To know a fact, to know something thoroughly, to know how to do something

Felix no sabe nada de inglés

Él sabe matemáticas

No bailar muy bien

Julian sabe conducir

Felix doesn't know English

He knows mathematics

I don't know how to dance very well

Julian knows how to drive
